The Cake. The Coffee. The Man.
It's Christmas Eve. Certainly that's not a news flash. It's the day before what is arguably the most important day in our planet's history. That sentence isn't written to minimize those who aren't Christians. I respect all non-violent belief systems, and those that live them authentically.
Nevertheless, for much of the world, today and tomorrow are seminal days. Seems like we
ought to do something special to celebrate that. And that's where the cake comes in. Baked by my family's close friend, TC, it has a special name, but I can't remember it. I do remember that it was a generous present at a get together last weekend. TC said the cake was delicious with coffee, and I love my morning coffee.
When I woke this morning my wife had laid the cake out on the counter, a pleasant surprise to a husband who can be forgetful. A small act of kindness without thought for oneself. Paying it forward, so to speak. No huge deal, but a nice way to start the day.
And that has given me an idea for something special this Christmas Eve. We can't lay out cake for everyone we meet, but we can all try to do one small thing to pay it forward. Take time to talk to an old person, and listen to what they say, perhaps pay for the car behind you at Starbucks, or give the homeless guy a fiver without judging how he will use it. Maybe it will change someone's day. Remind us how a man changed the world.
