Something Meaningful: On Phil Robertson, Gary Gygax, and 39 Deaths
I wanted to write something meaningful today, but I don't have time. You know, something that would make you think, something that would ramp up my page views, but honestly? I'm only human. I get tired. I juggle so many projects, sometimes I miss a ball or two.
That's okay, the balls are easily fetched, but still... I run out of time. If I were to write something meaningful today, I would say that not only is Phil Robertson an idiot, but that we are all idiots for 1) making people's sexual preferences a point of debate, and 2) glorifying silly-ass reality TV show "stars."
Yeah, I wanted to write something meaningful. If I had, I might have written a piece celebrating my awesome wife, and our 27 years of marriage. Now that is something to celebrate. Or
perhaps my three daughters. All hard working young ladies that have paid for a large portion of their own college education. I'm sure many of you have kids. You're proud of 'em. That's something worth talking about. Not Phil Robertson, not Kim Kardashian, not who dissed who on American Idol.
Maybe, if I wanted to write something worthwhile I'd spend a few words on Gary Gygax, the man who designed Dungeons and Dragons, a game that has brought joy to millions upon millions of players. He passed away five years ago. His death barely caused a ripple on the Internet. We were probably all watching Gilligan's Island reruns.
Maybe, if I wanted to write something worthwhile, I'd shed some ink for the 39 servicemen and woman who have died in Afghanistan this year. But only if I was writing something worthwhile. Otherwise, I'd whine about how much taxes I pay, blame the government for the job crises, or criticise Michele Oboma's choice of dress.
Yeah, I'd like to write something meaningful, but I'm a little short on time. Maybe, instead of me writing about it, we could all just spend sometime thinking about it.
