What Does a Book Say About Itself?
On the interview couch today is my novel, World at War:
Revelation. The book has kindly agreed to take a small break from being read to
answer a few questions. So, without further ado, I present Revelation.
Mark: So, it’s been a big month for you.
Revelation: How so?
Mark: Please don’t be a jerk. You know the sales figures.
Revelation: Well, yes, it has been a big month. It’s nice
when an old timer like gets a second lease on life.
Mark: And how old is old?
Revelation: As you know, I released as a paperback in 2010.
Mark: And how did that go?
Revelation: Not too well, really. A couple hundred people
bought me, but since you placed me in the Kindle store, it’s been a different
story.
Mark: Especially since I dropped the price to $2.99, no?
Revelation: Yeah, that seemed to be a sweet spot. There have
been days in the last month when I got into more people’s hands than I did in a
year as a paperback.
Mark: And hopefully those hands are washed.
Revelation: I hear ya.
Mark: Why does Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) work so well?
Revelation: Wider audience, better marketing, ease of
distribution. In paperback, I was primarily available through your former
company, Lock ‘n Load Publishing. Although there was the tie in with the World
at War game, most of those players weren't interested in the paranormal aspect
of the story. At KDP the audience is larger, and some of them seem to like the
mix of military adventure with paranormal elements.
Marks: What’s next?
Revelation: That’s a weird question coming from the guy that
wrote me.
Mark: Humor me.
Revelation: Next is Dusty’s War, right?
Mark: Yeah, I hope so.
Revelation: It’s a semi-sequel to Revelation. At least it
takes place in the same world that I do. It’s also a complete rewrite of
Everyone Dies in the End, focusing instead on one character, Dusty, a badass teleporter with a sawed off shotgun.
Mark: Been nice talking to you.
Revelation: Yeah. Creepy, but nice.
