How I Write a Genre Mash Up
“I don’t know how you did it,
but you did.” I get these emails. Often they say stuff exemplified by that
first sentence, and more often than not, they are saying that something in
regards to World at War: Revelation. In other words, how did you stuff that paranormal
peanut butter in my military adventure chocolate? Rupturing-at-the-seam-analogy aside, it was, and continues to be, easier than you might think.
First off, I’m retired military.
I spent a good part of my life around military types. I know how they think,
act, and talk. Which if the truth be known, is not much different th
an anyone
else. I’ve also been an avid reader of military fiction since Harold Coyle’s
Team Yankee first released in 1987, enthusiastic fan of realistic war films,
such as Black Hawk Down and Kelly’s Heroes (well, sort of realistic), and
intense player of Call of Duty. Put that stuff in a Waring blender, mix it on
high and you can pour out some authentic battle scenes.

Then there is the horror.
I came to horror via the underworld.
No, not some dark underworld, but rather Underworld the movie. I loved its
combination of weaponry and fangs. Since then I have been a rabid viewer of
horror film and voracious reader of paranormal novels (is that too many
adjectives?). I like to think that I bring my military sensibility to what at
its heart is an insensible subject. Bottom line, the paranormal beings in the
Revelation universe are as gritty as the military action. The vampires don’t
glisten, but neither are they an incomprehensible evil. To them we are food,
nothing more or less (with some notable exceptions).
I think it is that common sense,
believable mash up of genres that has led to the 4.7 average review score. If
it sounds good to you, why not drop by and give it a read? I’d love to hear
what you think.
Mark H. Walker served 23 years in the United States Navy, most of them as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal diver, he is the author of Desert Moon, an exciting mecha, military scifi novel with a twist, with plenty of damn science fiction in it despite what any reviewer says, as well as World at War: Revelation, a creepy, military action, with a love story, alternate history, World War Three novel thing, and numerous short stories. They are all available from Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing right here. Give them a try. I mean, what the hell?
