The Five Greatest Vampires in the History of the Galaxy
The Five Greatest Vampires in the History of the Galaxy
Vlad the Impaler. The man who started it all. Vlad III was
the Prince of Wallachia, a Christian, and a fighter against the Ottomans. As
the name would suggest, he made impaling his victims a habit. A habit which
gave him a reputation for cruelty throughout Europe .
Vlad's patronymic name was Dracula, inspiring the famous Count in Bram Stoker's
1897 novel.
1897 novel.
Bloodrayne. Not sure why I include Bloodrayne. The video
games are nothing special, the comic book is a throw away, and the three movies
are directed by Uwe Boll, but... but... for God's sake, look at the costume!
The Count. Where would we all be without Sesame Street 's Count? I think we'd be a
few laughs lighter, and a whole lot dumber. Here's to my favorite Sesame Street
character.
Selene. The best of the best. Kate Beckinsale's Underworld
character opened my eyes. Before Underworld I wasn't into horror movies, had
never considered juxtaposing paranormal with realistic, gritty gun battles. Now
that juxtaposition is part of most everything that I write or design. She was
the inspiration for my Revelation character, Katarina (see below).
Edward Cullen. You love him, or you hate him. Many of us endured
Twilight with wives and girlfriends, but when Cullen began shimmering we cringed,
"Enough is enough!" That's one side of it. The other side is that
Stephanie Meyers has written an engaging trilogy of books that captivated
millions of readers. If vampires shimmer in her reality, so be it.
Name withheld. My college girlfriend, let's call her Martha,
could drain the life from anything--a party, a date, a Sunday afternoon, or an
aspiring musician. She is certainly one of the five greatest vampires of all
time.
Katarina. A vampire of vampires, heroine, and callous slayer
of humans. A significant character in both World at War: Revelation, and Everyone Dies in the End, Katarina swims against the tide of conventional
vampire fiction. She isn't conflicted, she is totally at peace with her amoral,
ruthless, and remorseless self. Yet somehow my readers tell me they like her.
I'm not sure what that says about my readers.
That's it. The five greatest vampires in the history of the galaxy. Yeah, I know.
That was seven, but I'm a writer. You do the math.
See you tomorrow.
