On a Juggernaut, Lawn Mowing, and a Bit of a Snob
Happy Independence Day!
I'm taking a mulligan on today's blog. I'm revising my website, mowing the grass, and heading out to Smith Mountain Lake to drink beer, tell tall tales, and have fun. I hope the rain stops.I do, however, want to throw out a couple of nuggets.
Juggernaut
Over da Edge is a blog about writing, among other things. If you are like me, you rarely find your books inthe review section of Time magazine, or by swapping stories with the old folks at church. I like monsters, military science fiction, gritty combat, real stuff. If you are following my blog, I'm thinking you like that stuff also. If you do, you might like Adam Baker's Juggernaut. A prequel to his apocalyptic, page-turner Outpost, Juggernaut takes place in the Iraqi Desert, circa 2005. A group of mercenaries set off to recapture a lost shipment of gold. When they arrive at the scene they find a creepy ancient city, a double-crossing CIA operative, and the birth of the zombie plague that will conquer the planet.
The writing is stark, gritty, and fresh. The combat real. There are errors. In one scene a Marine officer is twisting his West Point ring (West Point is Army, Marine officers graduate from the Naval Academy), but overall it is a great read.
Last but Not Least
Nice blog post from Nicola Vincent-Abnett. She takes a totally different view of self-publishing than I. To be honest, she comes across as a bit of a snob. You can read it here.Friday fiction coming up tomorrow. With vamps.
