What do a General, a Vampire, and 100 Tanks Have in Common?
As with many of my stories, Desert Moon includes a mishmash
of characters. From a genetically engineered black ops agent with vampire-like
abilities to a U.S. Army general just woken from a 100-year cryogenic sleep,
the people inhabiting the desert moon, Sediana, are as varied as they are deep.
Follow along as we look into the lives of a couple of them.
Sara Yen. A key character, yet we don’t learn Sara’s name
till almost half of the book is read. It is then that she saves a life, and
introduces herself simply. “My name is Sara. Sara Yen. I’m not from Sediana.”
Sara isn’t in the habit of saving lives. Quite to the
contrary, she is in the habit of taking therm. In fact, through the first part
of the novel she is referred to by a simple moniker, Assassin. And an efficient
killer she is. Trained in a wide spectrum of weaponry, superhumanly fast, with
boosted senses, she is the equal of any squad of soldiers. Furthermore she
pursues her victims with a passion, a passion born of need. You see, the
geneticists who engineered Sara imbued
her with a need, a craving, for blood. A man-made vampire, so to speak.
It is not, however, a fate she accepts. She fights the craving desperately.
Sometimes it is a battle she wins, sometimes not.
Sara joins the rebels fighting against the oppressive Terran
Defense Force (TDF). With her help, they have an ally of unparalleled power,
unless of course, the TDF have an assassin of their own. Which of course, they
do. Thing is, their assassin is a sleeper agent, one who doesn’t
know of her (or his) power until activated.
General Jacob Adams, United States Army. Only there
isn’t one… United States
Army, that is. The United
States integrated into the Terran World
Government over a hundred years ago. As a hedge against that world government
bet, the United States
lifted a heavy armor brigade combat team to Sediana, placing the soldiers to operate it in
cryogenic sleep. There they remained, long forgotten, until discovered by a
pair of fugitives. Most of the soldiers died, their cryogenic chambers never
meant to last this long. Jacob Adams lived. Now he must choose whether to fight
for the successor of his army, the TDF, or fight for the rebels who want only
their freedom. Oh yeah, did I mention he’s in love with the beautiful woman who
commands Sediana’s TDF garrison?
Mark H. Walker served 23 years in the United States Navy, most of them as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal diver, he is the author of Desert Moon, an exciting mecha, military scifi novel with a twist, as well as World at War: Revelation, a creepy, military action, with a love story, alternate history, World War Three novel thing, and numerous short stories.
