Dear Richard Sherman, An Apology
Dear Richard,
I wanted to take a few minutes to apologize. I'm sort of busy, on my way to Seattle tomorrow (crazy coincidence, I know), but I figured that since I spent some time slamming you and your post game interview with Erin Andrews, I could spend a similar amount of time admitting I was wrong.
No, I wasn't wrong about the interview. It was childish and inappropriate. Being "in the moment" simply doesn't cut it as an excuse. On the other hand, people that know me might also put similar labels on some of my actions. I wouldn't want those people to wholly judge me by my inappropriate actions, and I was wrong to dive off the deep end in judging you by forty-five emotional seconds.
I'm a veteran, and I understand you helped raise money for a disabled vet. That touches me. I
appreciate that. I also understand that you founded a charity for school children, paying for pens, pencils, and clothes. Minimum stuff that kids need to have the self esteem that they need to succeed. I'm a father of three, so that also means a lot.
On the other hand, I saw you taunt Tom Brady, jump all over Skip Bayless (yeah, he's obnoxious, but still), and get into a Twitter feud with Darrelle Revis. In other words, you aren't perfect, but neither am I. And who wants perfect anyway?
So I guess when all that stuff is thrown into the mixing bowl you get the complete man that is you. An intelligent guy, an emotional guy, a somewhat brash guy. Yeah, you are all those things, but you are not the thug that some called you, and you are not the loser that I claimed. I was wrong, and I'm sorry.
BTW, I'll be in Seattle this weekend. Would love to meet you if you have a spare moment. Just drop me a tweet at @markholtwalker.
PS. Hope the ankle feels better soon. We need folks like you on the field.
