Pleasant Surprises

Busy, busy weekend. It was a weekend of surprises, most of them nice. I thought I’d list them here. Who knows? You might be interested.

Bree Sharp Live at the Fez: I first heard Bree on http://www.kgrl.com/. She’s an excellent guitarist and throaty, warm vocalist. This is her live album. Includes a cover of Dylan’s “Don’t think twice, it’s alright.” That’s not her best song, not by a long shot.

Sergeant Rock: That’s Frank Rock. And in two words that describes what DC’s 2009 revitalization of the series does. It humanizes it. Billy Tucci’s art and words tell a war story more real than much of the Hollywood tripe (Yeah, I’m talking about you, Clint). I love the style, both literary and the artistic. It just feels real. It just feels right.

Arizona 24 - Giants 17: Talk about feeling right. Warner and Fitzgerald are poetry. Someone really should cover that #11, right, Pam? (Sorry readers, that’s a semi-inside joke). I’ve always liked Warner, and I’ve always liked underdogs. I hope the Cardinals win the Super Bowl this year.

Blood: The Last Vampire: We watched the live-action adaptation of this famed anime movie and TV series. You know what? It wasn’t half bad. Forget acting, plot, or special effects, movies like this live or die on the atmosphere they create, and Blood created it in spades.

Borderlands: Termed a Role-playing shooter, Borderlands is a fact-paced action game with heavy role-playing elements. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the game draws heavily from Fallout 3, yet manages to keep it’s own sense of frantically fun identity.

My Daughter’s Volleyball Game: She missed a game winning serve, but then fought back to single-handedly win the next point. She’s an inspiration.

The Rising: Not my book, but rather Brian Keene. Did this guy do any research before he wrote about the military. Same ole evil officer, belligerent troops, blah, blah, yadda, yadda. Pu-freaking-LEESE. And he wins a Bram Stoker award for this? A less than pleasant surprise.

See you tomorrow.

Hmmmm, maybe I could borrow your copy of the Rising and see for myself? I wondered what it was about. See you in less than 2 weeks.
