Moving Forward

Things are really moving in my life. The first revision of that Strange-World-War-III-Book-That-Also-Has-Creepy-Stuff is complete and out to a trusted few for comment, and my company has three new products on the verge of release: All Things Zombie, Ring of Hills, and Not One Step Back. Oops… for those of you who don’t know, I own a board game publishing company, Lock ‘n Load Publishing. We don’t deal in Candy Land or Clue, although those are two very clever designs (Yes, Candy Land is clever for what it is and a real Hasbro cash cow), our products currently focus on conflict simulation.

But in addition to figuratively moving forward we have also spent the last month moving our warehouse and office. Two years ago, after ten years of earning a living as a home-based writer and four as a home-based game-designer and publisher, we decided to move our business into the nearby town of Rocky Mount.

“Hey,” we figured, “better Internet connection, more warehouse space, closer to our kid’s schools, what’s there to lose?”

Well, as it turns out, we had time to lose, and in big, slathering gobs. Working from a home office you have no transit time, and everything you ever need (no matter if it's Saturday at 3 PM or Tuesday at 2:15 AM) is right at your finger tips. Can’t sleep at 3AM? Not problem, wake up, knock out some work, and catch up on the sleep during the day. Anyway, after two years we realized the error of our way and returned home.

So I’m writing this from our comfortable home office, surrounded by the things I need to work and the people I love. It’s a new chapter in my life, and a fresh page for Lock ‘n Load Publishing. Tomorrow, I promise to get back to werewolves. Unless, of course, I throw down my annual rant on the awesome holiday of Halloween, and how a minuscule number of zealots are trying to take the fun of it away from our children.
