A New Year Resolution
Happy New Year. It's a busy day, so I'll keep it short. I
know on this first day of the new year we are full of resolutions. That's a
great thing, constant improvement fosters a positive outlook and greater
self-confidence. I also know that most of us will fall somewhat short on our
list of goals. That's not entirely bad either. The fact that goals are set and
strived for is good.
I would, however, like to throw out one suggestion for those
still looking for a goal, or even for those who desire a foundation on which
their other goals can be built. Resolve to be good to yourself this year. That
doesn't mean more chocolate cake and reclining on a couch, but rather a
cessation of the negative tapes we all run in our heads. In the long run, guilt
motivates no one. Spend a year without berating yourself, without calling
attention to your shortcomings. Instead focus on improving, and reward yourself
with a pat on the back for every positive step you take. If you make a mistake,
admit it, own it, but then move on. Don't revisit it.
I believe that if we approach all of our goals with this
attitude they will all be easier. And more easily attainable goals means more
success (however you want to define it), and more success means a Happy New
Year.
See you tomorrow.
