Five Years On... Bree Sharp, Sergeant Rock, Kurt Warner, and the 1%

Hi Guys and Gals,

This is a repost of something I put up a few years back. Still interesting, even more interesting is what has happened to these people, events, and happenings. Look for the updates at the end of each paragraph. On to the post...

Busy, busy weekend. It was a weekend of surprises, most of them nice. I thought I’d list them here. Who knows? You might be interested.

Bree Sharp Live at the Fez: I first heard Bree on KGRL She’s an excellent guitarist and throaty, warm vocalist. This is her live album. Includes a cover of Dylan’s “Don’t think twice, it’s alright.” That’s not her best song, not by a long shot.

Update: Bree started a techno group named Beautiful Small Machines. Their second album comes out November 10th.

Sergeant Rock: That’s Frank Rock. And in two words that describes what DC’s 2009 revitalization of the series does. It humanizes it. Billy Tucci’s art and words tell a war story more real than much of the Hollywood tripe (Yeah, I’m talking about you, Clint). I love the style, both literary and the artistic. It just feels real. It just feels right.

Update: Rock still rocks, but if you want to read the best war comic/graphic novel of all time check out Don Lomax's Vietnam Journal.

Arizona 24 - Giants 17: Talk about feeling right. Warner and Fitzgerald are poetry. Someone really should cover that #11, right, Pam? (Sorry readers, that’s a semi-inside joke). I’ve always liked Warner, and I’ve always liked underdogs. I hope the Cardinals win the Super Bowl this year.

Update: Well, the Cards didn't get to the Super Bowl, but that was before the NFL turned into a video game on turf. Nevertheless, with teams contacting retired QBs, such as Brett Favre, is there a chance Warner might yet once again walk on the field?

Blood: The Last Vampire: We watched the live-action adaptation of this famed anime movie and TV series. You know what? It wasn’t half bad. Forget acting, plot, or special effects, movies like this live or die on the atmosphere they create, and Blood created it in spades.

Update: Still beats the hell out of Vampire Diaries (no, I'm not going to link to it).

Borderlands: Termed a Role-playing shooter, Borderlands is a fact-paced action game with heavy role-playing elements. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the game draws heavily from Fallout 3, yet manages to keep it’s own sense of frantically fun identity.

Update: The game followed up with a very-well received sequel and a crappy iPad version.

My Daughter’s Volleyball Game: She missed a game winning serve, but then fought back to single-handedly win the next point. She’s an inspiration.

Update: She went on to play several years of traveling volleyball, and now plays for a major university's club team.

The Rising: Not my book, but rather Brian Keene. Did this guy do any research before he wrote about the military. Same ole evil officer, belligerent troops, blah, blah, yadda, yadda. Pu-freaking-LEESE. And he wins a Bram Stoker award for this? A less than pleasant surprise.

Update: Still stumble on this in a multitude of books. Evil military, bad soldiers. What do you expect when only 1% of the country has ever served? Bend close dear readers, I have a secret to tell you. Soldiers, sailors, and airman are just like everyone else, no better, no worse. Well, that isn't exactly true, I do think they tend to be a little better.

See you tomorrow.
