Eight Tips for Making 2015 a Successful Freelance Year and My Thoughts on Them

Wow, that was a hell of a title. Stumbled on this article on The Guardian. Written by Devon Maloney, it provides eight tips that will improve your freelancing abilities. Some aren't too bad, some are a little touchy-feely.

I've been an entrepreneur for twenty-five years. Some of the points below make sense, some not. Invoicing is one piece of great advice. Here's the best. Always put the projects that earn money at the top of the list. Sounds simple, but I know many freelancers/entrepreneurs that get caught up in busy work
Uh, I couldn't think of a good picture.
. Despite all that, some people just won't pay, they'll go to church, praise the Lord, and screw you out of your money. Just deal with it.

I don't buy into the "freelancing is more difficult for women and people of color." Not even sure I understand who "people of color" are. I have a color, it's sort of a beige-cream. On the woman side of things, I've watched Kickstarters run by cute girls with pretty smiles and lots of cleavage go for 45K while similar projects by late middle-age dudes have trouble getting out of the single digits. That doesn't mean the female author isn't legit, but it does mean that--at least in the independent author world-- pretty smiles and plunging necklines sell books. So, no, I don't think being a freelance author is more difficult for women.

Anyway, go read the article for yourself

Mark H. Walker served 23 years in the United States Navy, most of them as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal diver. He is the owner of Flying Pig Games, and the author of Desert Moon, an exciting mecha, military scifi novel with a twist, with plenty of damn science fiction in it despite what any reviewer says, as well as World at War: Revelation, a creepy, military action, with a love story, alternate history, World War Three novel thing, Everyone Dies in the End, and numerous short stories. They are all available from Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing right here. Give them a try. I mean, what the hell?
